A public issue in Singapore is about the foreign talent policy. The cause of this problem is that Singapore requires a larger workforce for a better economy, but we do not have enough locals in the workforce, and that’s when the foreign talents come in. Also, Singapore needs talent in many different aspects, and not all locals can be skilled in the different areas. Foreign talents can bring in new ideas and technology into the Republic, which makes sure we do not fall behind other economically developed countries. Not only can they bring in the ideas, they can share with the locals about their experiences and knowledge which can benefit us greatly. Also, with them around, we can keep our economy competitive. Our lack in population is a big problem, and the increased number of foreign talents in Singapore can help. However, despite these benefits, some locals feel that they are disadvantaged when compared to the foreigners. Locals claim that they have difficulty looking for jobs as the foreign talents take up a number of job opportunities. It’s not just in the workforce. Certain students feel that their chances of obtaining a scholarship are lower as these foreign talents tend to do extremely well in academics as they are very hardworking. For some locals, the dislike of foreign talents can spur them on when they are working. They may not want to lose out to the foreign talents, and thus, put in extra effort in their work in order to be promoted to a higher rank in a shorter time. When they try hard to beat those foreign talents, they may have unknowingly discovered their own niche and that skill could have improved the economy greatly. Too, the intense competition can cause the locals to fight for a place in the current society and through these “fighting”, talents will be found as well.
