Football or Basketball Football and basketball are two very popular sports. They are very similar, They require two teams, a venue, a ball, rules & regulations, a certain amount of players that are required, and time involved. Their differences include the ball shape, venue, number of players, uniforms and protective gear required, length of time playing, scoring system, and rules & regulations. While football is the most important sport in the United States with a percentage of 54, basketball is not far behind with a 36%. The difference in contact level makes up the biggest reason for this gap because more people enjoy watching the hitting that is involved in Football (Jones). The first difference that is noticed between the two sports is the shape of the ball involved. A basketball is round so that it can be bounced or dribbled while in play. A football is oval shaped with a slight point at each end so that it can fly through the air when thrown. Both of these balls are leather and only one is needed to play the sport. Next, is the type of venue of each sport. Basketball is played in or outdoors, on a court that has a netted basket on each side. The players wear shorts, tank tops and basketball shoes as their uniform. The court is 94ft X 50ft, made of highly polished wood, and has a rim on each end where the players score points (Planet Green). Football is played on a 100 yard field made of grass or turf since the players fall down or get tackled frequently. At each end of the field there is a goal area where the players score and a field goal post where they score extra points. Let us look at the number of players required for each sport. Basketball only needs 10 players for a game (5 on court and 5 on the bench) so most of the professional teams will have between 12 and 15 players to cover down for any injuries (FIBA).
