Author: Jake Date: 12/09/2010 Introduction This essay includes my findings from research on the disease, and explains the signs, symptoms, causes, cures and prevention of the pathogen Cholera. The Bacterium Cholera is a severe bacterial infection caused by the bacterium “Vibrio cholerae”, the most common symptoms of the infection are diarrhoea ,vomiting and muscle cramps, this can lead to rapid dehydration and sometimes death. You can transmit Cholera by water that is contaminated with infected faeces; and also transmit it due to poor food hygiene1. Cholera kills an estimated 120,000 people a year2. If the bacteria enter the small intestine, they use their flagella to propel themselves through the lining of the intestinal wall, they produce a toxic protein.
Environmental Hazards a. In the St. Lawrence River, lots of industry has resulted in high levels of toxic chemical such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and heavy metals. b. Because these toxins affect not only one specie but also all of species that are interconnected by food chain. c. These pollution decline beluga’s immune system, get disease easily that linked to low birth rates of belugas which have lived in the St. Lawrence River.
Zachary’s stomach contributes to the formation of ulcers in other parts of the G.I. tract by the acids needed to breakdown food are excessive and cause the stomach to over work therefore causing surrounding parts to be over worked as well. If the stomach is always churning food the digestion processes is always on going. Parietal cells and gastric glands are directly related to the formation of ulcers. A major causing factor is chronic inflammation due to Helicobacter pylori that colonizes the mucosa.
It can be caused by raw meat coming in contact with already prepared food or unwashed food, and undercooked food. The main cause of salmonella is coming in contact with feces from a person or animal. As gross as this sounds it does happen due to people not washing their hands, thus causing salmonella to enter the body and go into the intestines and that is where it lives until killed. It is a very small bacteria that cannot be seen by the human eye just by microscope. Salmonella is very serious when it is contacted and can be deadly, so make sure you follow proper hygiene to ensure that you are getting any bacteria off of your food and hands.
Sometimes outbreaks of scabies can occur in social care establishments due to poor hygiene. 2. Understand the transmission of
Raven Johnson Mr. Montgomery 3/14/12 Bubonic Plague The Bubonic Plague is a deadly infectious disease, which is caused by the bacterium Yesinia pestis. It is transmitted through the bite of a flea, and has killed millions of people. This plague is one of the most feared of all diseases (McNeill, W. H.). It is easily transmittable and has a high mortality. It can be cured through antibiotics (McNeill, W. H.).
Unit 3 D1: Recommendations in relation to identify hazards to minimize the risks to the service user groups 1. Feeling sick or being sick Feeling sick or being sick can contaminate the pool and can pose a serious health risk to the staff and students at Ivy house. If not attended to the pool can become a fertile breeding ground for bacteria that can cause a wide range of illnesses. For example a parasite called cryptosporidium is excreted when faeces enters the water. This can cause really bad and severe diarrhoea, sickness, stomach cramps and fever.
Coughing up blood was particularly a bad problem because everyone around you was then susceptible to the disease. The bacteria would go airborne after coughing blood, which would then infect those around the person. Most people would die two to seven days after being infected by the

Giardiasis, an illness that affects the digestive tract, is caused by a microscopic parasite called Giardia lamblia. (1) The parasite attaches itself to the lining of the small intestines in humans, where it sabotages the body's absorption of fats and carbohydrates from digested foods. Giardia is one of the chief causes of diarrhea in the United States, and is transmitted through contaminated water. (3) It can survive the normal amounts of chlorine used to purify community water resevoirs, and can live for more than 2 months in cold water. Young kids are three times more likely to have giardiasis than adults, which leads some experts to believe that our bodies gradually develop some form of immunity to the parasite as we grow older.
