Food safety problems Good morning everyone. Today my topic is about food safety problems. Look, here are some fruits, vegetables, eggs and drinks. They all look tempting. Do you want to eat them? Be careful, they may be not safe to eat. In recent years, food safety problems have been paid close attention. There have been recalls of the inferior milk powder, clenbuterol, Sudan I, tainted egg, and today’s poisonous cucumber. More and more food safety accidents occur repeatedly. We can’t help to ask why these bad things happen. We eat every day; we drink every day. Food is the paramount necessity for us. Food safety problems concern our survival, life and continuation, so food safety is very important for our life and health. First, I want to talk about the situation of food safety. With the development of the economy, food hygiene and safety become a hot topic which is concerned by more and more people. In recent years, poor quality food, and poisonous food incidents continue to occur. These occurrences are a threat to people’s life and health. With the widespread use of new technologies in food processing, new food safety issues continue to emerge. We always live in fear. In 2008, a severe food safety accident occurred in China. The milk powder which was produced by San Lu Group Company contained melamine, causing infants to get kidney stone. Many infants were persecuted by the milk powder; some even died. Melamine is a low-toxic chemical product. Eaten in large enough quantities, melamine can cause kidney damage. Melamine can mimic protein in certain food-quality tests, so manufacturers illegally used it in milk powder, leading to the poisoning event. With the further investigation of the milk powder, Yili, Mengniu and other famous brands have been exposed to contain melamine.
