Food Memory It was once said in a show I use to watch with my grandpa the Wonder Years that a memory is a way of holding onto the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose. The greatest memories that I have centralize in some way or another around food. Food is one of the biggest parts of whom I am, I cook to show my appreciation, I try new things out of respect, and I make dinner and even sometimes desserts for people to make them feel better when they’re sick or maybe even a little sad. The one memory that I have that holds the greatest significance and most importance to me goes back, for me, what feels like a century ago. I was 11 and for the first time I went and spent almost the entire summer at my maternal grandparent’s house up in northern pa. Now they live on top of a mountain in the middle of nowhere, and it’s like going to a completely different universe when we go to visit them. Everyday all day long all you see is tree after tree and farms and people on bikes and animals galore, and every night, you don’t just get to see a handful of stars like in the city, no, you see ever one of them out there. It is quite beautiful. Don’t get me wrong it wasn’t my first time visiting them there and trust me it wouldn’t be my last. However, this year it was special because this year was the first year that I was going to spend my birthday with them. Now I must warn you, to me my birthday it sum what of a holiday, every year that I could remember since I was little we’ve always had fireworks to set off and we always barbeque enough food for an entire army, and had friends and family over all day long, and I don’t think the fact that the fourth of July was the next day could possibly have anything to do with the reasoning as to why we did those things, it was probably just because it was my birthday.
