Flowers for Algernon Essay In the story “Flowers for Algernon”, Charlie undergoes an experiment that triples his IQ of 68 and makes him into a genius. Even though it was temporary, Charlie expressed deep joy over this, and therefore I believe that this was a positive experience for Charlie. First of all, he stated near the start of his regression that he felt glad that he was able to find out so much for science, even if he had to disprove Dr Nemur and Dr Strauss’ theories. Secondly, he pointed out in the beginning that he didn’t care that the intelligence wouldn’t last, and that he just wants to be able to experience it once. Finally, Charlie stated in the end that he was very glad he was able to see things from a smart person’s perspective for once and he was happy that he saw things he never even knew existed. Overall, I believe this operation was good for Charlie. First of all, Charlie stated near the start of his regression that he felt glad that he was able to find out so much for science, even if he had to disprove Dr Nemur and Dr Strauss’ theories. He specifically said that he’s glad to be the “first dumb person ever to find out something important for science”. Charlie also worked so much that he ended up moving a cot into his lab to research, proving his avid enthusiasm. If he didn’t get an IQ boost, he would’ve never been able to do that. Secondly, Charlie pointed out in the beginning that he didn’t care that the intelligence wouldn’t last, and that he just wants to be able to experience it once. Even when he was being depressed about his mind regressing, he earnestly said that he didn’t blame anyone and that it was none of their faults. Charlie is a good person and was truly thankful for the operation. Even after he regressed into his child-like state, he thanked everyone for giving him the chance of being able to become intelligent. Finally,
