Checkpoint: Five Pillars of Islam The Five Pillars are the basic tenets of Islam. The most central of all Islamic beliefs is that the only God is Allah. Islamic culture holds that the prophet Muhammad is the founder of the Islam faith. There are also other prophets who contributed to this faith that are shared prophets with the Christian religion. The main goal for Muslims is to live their lives aligned with Allah’s will. They believe that doing so will gain them a place in Paradise. The beliefs expressed in the Five Pillars are mirrored in Islam in many ways. The First Pillar concerns practicing one’s faith in a way that honors the prophet Muhammad and the one unified God. The Second Pillar details the five daily prayer sessions and the water rituals associated with these prayers. This pillar discusses how the rituals and prayers are a way to become closer to God and learn about him. The Third Pillar mandates that all Muslims tithe a minimum of 2 ½% of their earnings for the benefit of needy Muslims. The Fourth Pillar concerns mandated fasts and details how these fasts purify the mind and make man learn to be more like their God. In the Fifth Pillar, Muslims are instructed to make a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once. This pilgrimage is a core practice. The Third Pillar would be the simplest for me to follow. This Pillar mandates the donation of at least 2 ½% of one’s annual earnings to other needy Muslims. This Pillar is one that would be good for all of us to practice since it is good to help those in need from all walks of life. The Pillar that would be the most difficult for me to follow is the Fourth Pillar. This mandates certain fast times. I have not been disciplined when it comes to fasting and would find the battle with my body’s needs difficult to win. I find this religion particularly interesting.
