Rhetorical Analysis on I Do by Arshiya Mohammad Economy – Majority of the sentences were short. It was a cute story, but the ending made me sad. She was able to get her return on her investment because she communicated very efficiently and ended off with a bang. Also, she used words that most little kids would use like cubby, tummy, and mummy to convey how children speak. I noticed a redundancy in the story, “five rows back from the front” but that may have added to enhance the children’s story.
They were most interested in sports, had male social groups and had a low tolerance for most girls. We discussed that family status and environment does play a significant role in the girls’ decisions and actions regarding which social group they entered into. We saw that the girls with single parents or from a low socioeconomic status tend to act out or try to gain negative attention from their peers and authority. In our group we discussed how one of the group members was a tomboy because she valued the respect of the boys for their drive and determination. Another girl in the group was a girlie girl because she went to an all-girls high school.
Assess sociological explanations of gender differences in education (20 marks) Exams results for GCSE and A level have shown that girls are doing better than boys even in the traditional male subjects like maths and science, although boys are slightly improving, they are not improving as fast as girls are and this is dues to many external and internal factors. An external factor of why girls are achieving better than boys in education is because there is now changes in the attitudes, ambitions and roles of females in society. Sue Sharpe’s (1994) did a study on working class girls in the 1970’s and found that girls main priorities were love, marriage and family. She then did the study again in 1990’s and found that attitudes of females have changed as girls now believe a career and being independent is important. Sharpe’s believe this could be because of the changing attitudes of society in general towards women and the impact of feminism.
This bought on Marketisation where schools try to attract other students by raising standards to show they are most successful. On the other hand, sociologists disagree as most educational reforms have not helped all students, only some or wasn’t very effective enough to help improve educational experiences. For example, the Foster Act wasn’t very helpful as the teaching was dire and students were less successful therefore resulted them in having weak qualifications and bad experiences. The Butler Act system with the 11+ exam was mostly based on middle class children therefore they had a better chance than working class. This was unequal as they had an advantage even though the test was the same.
The research also showed how these issues can be corrected or even prevented. Most often it is easy to spot girls who battle with low self-esteem and low self confidence, by their body language and conversations. Most girls experience insecurity or low self-esteem around the middle school years. The need to focus on the elementary and middle school years is far more important today than it was twenty years ago. Ashes for Beauty there are only gainers and no losers.
Assignment 4: Resilience and the Community (1) Minority Little Brothers and Sisters showed a much more dramatic lowering effect in their likelihood to use drugs than those who were not in ethnic groups mainly because of the factor of community and culture. Minority or ethnic groups are often tied to cultures wherein family and kin are important values and support systems . Ties with family are strong and the children are socialized to look at the family as the primary caregiver. Minority Little Brothers and Sisters respond well and in this case , much better than non-ethnic Little Brothers and Sisters because of their expectations and perceptions about family and sources of support Viewing a Big Brother or Big Sister as a family member
This research has also discovered other interesting results. First is that the quantitative assessment is lower for about 810 percent points than the qualitative. Second, people don’t consider intercourse as source of happiness, but they believe that it is enjoyable than cultural activities or volunteer works. Then, when their money or income increases they are become happier. Next is that women are happier than men; lastly, out of 10 respondents, 8 people believed that happiness is related to the growth of the economy is the same as happiness, as opposed to the same studies.
It was very plain and simple. Students get real use to think technique because throughout high school it was so repetitive and we all got very comfortable with it. Although the 5 paragraph format limits our ideas and we don’t get to expand on our topics because we are so stuck on the 3 ideas and we just to those instead of expanding our thinking. By limiting the amount of ideas we chose we think we are choosing the 3 main points but there could be a possibility that the other ideas were just as important but we don’t have enough room for them. It did help us stay on track and to consistently talk about the topic instead of rambling off about irrelevant ideas.
Intervening Variable An intervening variable is one which interferes with the apparent association between two (or more) other variables. More generally this called a 'spurious' variable. Suppose you want to study the relationship between class size and how well students learn. You compare two classes, one small and one large. At the end of the term it is discovered that the students in the smaller class had better grades than those in the larger class. Your conclusion is that small class size indeed causes better grades.
