BIO 112 Assignment 1 February 19, 2012 1. List and briefly describe five characteristics of living organisms. Give an example of each. -Growth is one of the most common in living organisms. It involves using food or energy to produce new cells. The permanent increase in a cell numbers and size is known as growth. Good example would be plants. -Reproduction is that all living organisms that have an ability to produce from offspring. Good example is human being, when male and female produce a baby. -Movement is all living things. We may not see it all the time but all living things move from time to time. Good example would a tree how it grows from for ages and it moves its branches from time to time throughout its life. -Nutrition is a process by which organisms obtain energy and raw materials from nutrients. For example plants and trees use sunlight or water. -Sensitivity is when all living organisms are able to sense and respond to stimuli around them such as temperature, sound, light etc. For example, a snake will be alert when it feels the vibration around it or dog can sense something by its nose and respond to it. 2. Describe the action of a buffer and how it can be important in maintaining the pH of a living system. - Buffers are weak acids or bases. Buffer ensures that something is not at either extreme. It maintains the pH of living all living systems. It is very important for it to maintain the pH of a living system because it helps keep the pH level at constant rather than changing; if it changes it could be fatal. For example if we as human beings didn’t have buffer in our system then we would not be able to get oxygen and die. 3.
