February 17, 2011 Fitness Plus – Case #3 Fitness Plus – Case #3 Brief Summary Fitness Plus is a full-service health and sports club situated in Greensboro, North Carolina. Created in 1995, Fitness Plus provides a range of facilities and services to support three primary activities: fitness, recreation, and relaxation. Short Term Problems In recent years, with both population and geographic growth, Fitness Plus’s membership has grown and is now faced with a capacity problem – overcrowding. As a result, exercise equipment is becoming unavailable and members are beginning to complain [specifically during peak hours – 4:00pm to 7:00pm]. In order to avoid losing members to various competitors, this full-service health and sports club needs to resolve its current capacity issue. In the short-term outlook, Fitness Plus needs to identify customer needs and attempt to satisfy the gap between current customer needs and current offerings without the option of expansion. With a large shift in demand, projected demand is now outweighing the current capacity Fitness Plus can offer. As of 2005, with the number of members increasing, member complaints arose centering around the Nautilus, cardiovascular, and aerobics fitness areas. This is caused by the number of members and the services they value far exceeding Fitness Plus’s capacity (i.e. equipment/space). During peak hours, 80 members per hour checked in to use the facilities. With this growth, waiting lines have begun to develop due to varying arrival and process times, causing bottlenecking. Aside from data collected stating that individuals work out on average 60 minutes a day, no other data was collected to determine if members utilized more than one piece of equipment/area of the club per visit, thus if correct, complementing the above problem – waiting lines.
