Research your audience and take the time to review what will be the first thing this person sees and what they hear coming from you, “How would you perceive you?” | First Impressions Making a great first impression is imperative to becoming an influential leader. Whether that initial meeting is face-to-face, over the phone or online, every second and every word counts. First impressions are critical in every aspect of our lives, business or personal. While we were always taught “don’t judge a book by its cover,” unfortunately, we all come to instant conclusions about a person the first time we communicate with them. We assume a lot based on what we first see and hear from someone with whom we have never met. Just from looking at the way someone is dressed, or how well groomed they are, or what type of closes they are wearing; in our minds we form a conclusion of the type of person they are, how they conduct themselves, or what they may even possibly do for a living. Even on the phone, only from hearing someone’s voice we form an image in our minds of what this person may look like, if he or she is nice, or if they are educated, and sometimes what type of mood thy may be in. In business, using your personality can be an effective strategy in building relationships when communicating with business associates as well as potential customers. The best first impression is to always be professional. You can create a professional impression by first knowing your audience, not using slang language, and maintain a professional appearance with proper grooming and attire.
