Fireweed Fireweed is written by Skye Bannon, it’s about a very special day in Baluta’s life. Baluta is carpenter from Liberia. He lives with his brother Jato and his wife Sama. Baluta has experienced some very though things as he saw his sister and dad die, that is also why he was forced to move to USA. There are some different themes in the story some of them are poverty, culture difference and racism. But all these are just sub-themes. The real main theme is cherish to the present and take nothing for granted. Baluta saw his dad getting killed and his sister raped and murdered, it is a view of a total different world, which not many people can relate to. ‘’he had to lift himself from benath of stone’’ that means, that he has to carry on and hold his head high even though he has witnessed some tough things. He will never take anything for granted after all the bad things he has experienced. The positive side about this story is that, he is living in America now, where he is having a better life in America. Fireweed is written with a third person narrator who is omniscient. The story has point of view at Baluta. We can see that the narrator is omniscient ‘’Baluta felt awfull…(line17 p.9)’’ the narrator knows how Baluta feels. The story is chronologic with flashbacks. The story takes place over one day and it’s written in past tense. The flashback Baluta has is, from when he lived in Liberia. All of the memories appear because something new happens in his life, which reminds him of something which happened in Liberia. The first flashback is in the shower, where the water is cold ‘’Cold like Kpatawee Falls back home, Baluta thought’’ And now we know that is it going to be a remembering day. We don’t know the age of Baluta’s because, it is not mentioned in the story, but so are neither wife nor children, so he must be relatively young. He’s very polite
