Film Vs. Digital In this technological world photography has evolved; new advancements in cameras from film to digital. As the technology evolves so do questions, is one better than the other? And why is it better? Lets dive into the question a bit. I have used both film and digital before. Both have their place in photography. In film vs. digital you have to understand they are two different mediums. Both are used for the same purpose, and are not related. In photography most people shoot with digital. Being it has less variables to control. This makes it a bit easier to get the photo you’re looking for. On the other hand film has it purpose as well. A skilled photographer can capture the photo he/she wants using natural effects as well as the full extension of the camera. Now taking the necessary steps to go from shoot to print is the challenging part. If done right the pictures can come out looking like nothing that comes from a digital. You can use processes to get a certain effect for that picture but with digital you are not as limited with what you can do. In my opinion most labs make undesirable prints from negatives or film. Which is why the digital photographers who don’t manufacture their own prints get their good pictures. Developing your own pictures from film will give you the choice on how it comes out. With digital photography you can set the parameters for the printer giving you the full control of your print. Large format film still rules for serious landscape photography. I use digital for people, fun shots and convenience. Digital replaced film in 1999 for big-city newspapers. One of the reasons the photos look different is the highlights. We are use to the way that film looks, it overloads gracefully when the picture gets to bright or washed out. Thus mimicking the human eye far better than digital photography.
