The Dagenham machinists strike, 1968 • Nearly 200 female workers went out to the Ford Motor Corporation plant in Dagenham for protest. • In summer 1968, there was protest of an unequal treatment, in England. • The Dagenham women's strike was widespread and it had caught attention on an important equal pay legislation, in England. 2. Women trike for equal pay, 1968 (audio) –write notes on what the women say • Women machinistsat a Ford car factory have the job of making seat covers for cars, but earn the same amount of money as a factory sweeper.Even women who beaded dresses for the queen were payed the same amount. • To upgrade their work status to Grade C as machinists and to be considered as skilled as men were in the labour force, the women machinists went on strike in 1968. Machinists weren’t upgraded from Grace B to Grade C until 1984. • Materials used to make the car seats were transported to the factory through gates at picket lines. The women would take turns guarding the gates and stopping any materials from being delivered, thus further extending their strike. • Because of the strike, all men workers at the factory could not work or earn money either. • Tension is formed between men and women about equal pay and high skills. Men complain that women only work to gain extra pocket money, and should be at home taking care of children and doing housework. • In 1970, equal pay became law in the U.K. 3.
