FIGURES OF SPEECH AND THEME IN BURN’S A RED, RED ROSE POEM By: Jamilah NIM: 1125030056/English Literature Poetry is one genre of literature which tries to extend the message through the word. According to the Concise Oxford in the Encyclopedia of Literature And Criticism (edited by Martin Coyle, Peter Garside, and friends: 166) take a poetry as an ‘elevated expression of elevated thought or feeling in metrical or rhythmical form’; and its second definition of poet is ‘writer in verse, esp. one possessing high powers of imagination, expression, etc. so, the feeling in the poetry is expressed by the certain words and languages. According to Ferdinansyah (2007:1), “Puisi adalah bentuk karya sastra yang bersisi ungkapan dari penulis dalam bentuk sederhana dan mengunakan kata-kata yang indah. Pada umumnya, puisi dibuat lebih menonjolkan keindahan dan maknanya sukar dimengerti. Hal inilah yang membedakan puisi dengan karya sastra yang lain, misalnya prosa, cerpen, dongeng, dan lain sebagainya”. From that definition we can conclude that poetry prominent the difficult meaning through the beautiful words, that is why poetry different with the other literary work. There are some aspects which make poetry is difficult to understand such as the use of languages. Poetry used the figurative language or called as figure of speech to extend the meaning. Figure of speech is a mode of expression in which words are used out of their literal meaning or out of their ordinary use in order to add beauty or emotional intensity or to transfer the poet's sense impressions by comparing or identifying one thing with another that has a meaning familiar to the reader.
