Fiedler asserts that leader behavior is inflexible and cannot be readily changed. I do mostly agree with Fiedler's theory that a leadership style is fixed but that the leader's effectiveness is based on 3 distinct situational factors. The two styles of leadership are the relationship-orientated leader and the task-orientated leader. However, I do believe that it is possible for a leadership style to change dependent on the maturity of the leader. I have seen this displayed in a few military individuals as they matured in age changed from a hard nose no non-sense task-orientated only leader transform into a more of a relationship-orientated leader, perhaps as humans mature their views of life and their own mortality alters their approach to other humans; I also believe that a change in a leadership style does not impact the leader's effectiveness negatively. I believe that in selecting a Leader for a position it is situational and that the organization must identify and understand a company’s needs, goals, as well as time constraint in meeting their goals. In the Fiedler's Contingency Theory of Leadership; Fiedler’s Theory explains that a leadership style is fixed and is a part of the leader’s personality trait so it becomes very difficult to almost impossible for leader to learn another style; Fiedler bases the effectiveness of a leader on 3 distinct situational factors: 1. “Leader-member relations - Degree to which a leader is accepted and supported by the group members. 2. Task structure - Extent to which the task is structured and defined, with clear goals and procedures. 3. Position power - The ability of a leader to control subordinates through reward and punishment” (VectorStudy.com, 2012). And based upon this information an organization must identify their needs in order to get the right type of leader for the right type of situation.
