Upon picking my topic for this paper, I decided I wanted to do something that I had no background information on, so I chose to do my paper on Fibromyalgia(FM). A co-worker had mentioned that her daughter has this disease, so the name immediately stuck out while skimming our list of topics. This paper will discuss what it is, common symptoms, how it is diagnosed, possible cures, as well as other helpful information that I have stumbled upon in my research. What is it? After doing just a couple minutes of reading I learned that it is known as a disorder or syndrome, not a disease. In order for something to be classified as a disease there has to be an exact cause and exact symptoms, yet these things are still unknown for fibromyalgia. In…show more content…
In the article entitled "Fibromyalgia: Harmonizing Science With Clinical Practice Considerations", Perrot mentions that the definition of FM has had a significant change over time. At first people thought that it had to do with the muscles, then it turned into a psychological disorder, by the end of the 20th century it became aware to scientists that this thing they called Fibromyalgia was a serious issue that has plagued so many patients. In the 19th century scientists weren’t exactly sure what causes fibromyalgia and still to this day we aren’t sure. Although I have never been in such excruciating pain, I do believe some of it could definitely be psychological. Your brain is a very powerful tool, and brain washing is a very valuable tool. I believe that the more you think of a matter the worse you are making it. I have definitely experienced that after I had a pulmonary embolism, some of my symptoms included shortness of breathe. Many times after I thought I had another one because my breathing was becoming difficult and all I could think about was the blood clot, and there for my breathing got worse. But in the end after going to the hospital to get it re-checked everything was normal. It was my brain psyching my self up and getting worked up over this scary situation. I think that is a huge possibility when it comes to patients that are diagnosed with fibromyalgia. The pain is so intense…show more content…
