Just because there may be a few corrupt politicians or some that are only out to satisfy their or their political party’s agenda, doesn’t mean that all are. Myers, D. G. (2005). Being feminists myself I have been called a” dike” a” Man Hater”. We just want equal rights, equal pay to be treated with respect. “Feminists can produce a positive stereotype, considering that women work just as hard as a man, inside and outside of the home.
I chose the quote above because it showed that women should not use their stereotypical strengths as an argument for equality. It would be like saying those sigma's put on women by non-feminist are all right. Katha Pollitt states that everyone is responsible for " the environment, a more humane workplace, economic justice, social support for children to make the world a better place regardless of who you are. I believe that her beliefs about "difference feminism and women's superiority to men would be a part of making the world a better place, in her eyes. I believe that
Since we haven’t reached that point, affirmative action for women is seen as more or less acceptable. However, these “sameness criteria” have nothing to do with authentic gender equality, and instead introduce an element of confusion when discussing this subject. Assuming that equality means sameness is inherently problematic since if you want men and women to make exactly the same career choices, family choices and lifestyles choices, then you are basically trying to fit individuals into your own preconceived notion of reality. A Better Definition Equality between the sexes simply means that men and women have equal rights, responsibilities and opportunities. According to this definition we need to remove all legal discrimination as well as break down stereotypes that prevent people from leading the lives that they want.
We need to promote it in our society, so we can create a world where everyone receives the same treatment and has same honor in the society. A community where we co-exist and do not determine each other's worth through a narrow spectrum of the stereotypical social construct. No one benefits from patriarchy; not even men. As Emma Watson said, 'both men and women should feel free to be sensitive, both men and women should feel free to be strong.' By choosing feminism we will encourage this thought.
Liberation is seen to be achieved through raising women’s consciousness of subjugation. Feminists believe that women have accepted inferiority to men subconsciously, and thus need to realise this before becoming liberated. Millet argues that women are in a “power-structured relationship…whereby one group of persons is controlled by another”, thus suggesting that feminists believe that in our current society men control women. Although there is controversy between feminists as to the extent of advancing a woman’s role within society, as first-wave feminists demand that women should enjoy the same legal and political rights as men, whilst second-wave feminists have greater focus on the personal side of society and call for complete social revolution. Whilst this presents a clear divide within the doctrine, it
For example, Antigone seems to be impervious toward Creon’s misogynistic ways; however, her sister, Ismene, is seen to be internalizing the idea that women are insignificant compared to men. We see the impact that this sexist culture has on Ismene when she tells Antigone, “We must remember that by birth we’re women, and, as such, we shouldn’t fight with men. Since those who rule are much more powerful, we must obey in this and in events which bring us even harsher agonies… Since I’m being compelled, I will obey those in control. That’s what I’m forced to do. It makes no sense to try to do too much” (77-85).
Unfair Representation During the formation of my essay on Zora Neale Hurston’s “Their Eyes Were Watching God”, I will examine the foundation on which the novel explores the representation of sex of an individual. Some questions kept in thought during the progression of the novel were why Hurston portrayed the representation of women in such an under mining way. Though she herself could not be taken as a sexist person rather a writer connecting her characters to a time when women weren’t considered as self-dependent or dominant. The representation of gender in a part of the novel comes back to the idea that men are the superior breed and women should just follow their dominance and not voice their opinions. The representation of gender in the novel represents how the cultural antics were back in those days, it was custom for a woman to marry, bear children and take care of the house, while the man was out providing for his family “bringing home the bacon”.
Sexism is defined in our textbook as any attitude, action, or institutional structure that subordinates a person because of his or her sex. What this is basically saying is that someone who is sexist will think differently and act negatively towards the opposite sex. Sometimes an individual can be sexist towards their own sex. Most western societies have minimal sexism and more racial hostilities. In other parts of the world sexism is more prominent because males have dominant roles over women and therefore look down upon them.
When the Knight finally does find out what it is that women want, he is told that it’s power over the husbands, that’s a pretty feminist statement for a time when women were still considered property. But as feminist as that may seem, is the Wife of Bath really a depiction of early feminism, or a crazy lady? While some might see the Wife as a feminist, she really is just an over-controlling woman, in her 6 times being married, reprimanding her husband
As Estelle Freedman expresses in her introduction to De La Barre’s work, “Since the mind ‘has no sex,’ women as well as men have a right to knowledge and to pursue scientific and literary studies” (Freedman 10). If a desire to learn burns within a woman, denying her opportunity to quench that desire not only violates that woman’s rights, but human rights in general. In a society that fought for the independent rights of man, denying women any right that a man possesses puts to shame all efforts and values regarding the freedom of men. If physical traits must be taken into account when comparing men and women, compare their brains. As Francois De La Barre says, “A woman’s brain is exactly the same as ours.
