Feminism and its Importance to Society The word “feminism” originates from a French word that genuinely means female. Yet like any other major issue, feminism is a very controversial topic in our society today as it presents a stigma towards its supporters. Many believe feminism has become irrelevant to the further growth of our society as it is a topic of the past. These individuals are blinding themselves from the inequality that females face to this day. Females in the social order are expected to take on a nurturing role in the family alongside a career if preferred. Due to this expectation females currently in the workforce are left to a great economic disadvantage. Finally even though females are given the opportunity to participate in political affairs, due to past stereotypes women are not able to strive in the political field. Feminism is a crucial societal perspective that devotes social, economic and political equality between both sexes in society. Our society has always projected females to be dependant, insecure and sensitive. Females before the late 1800’s have been expected to take care and manage a family with no question. They were perceived to be weak and incapable in regular society. As time went on, females had begun promoting the need for equality within marriage, parenting and property rights. Throughout the 1900s females were able to gain the status of a person and in turn get the right to vote. From this it is evident that females are able to diminish their past stereotype and be seen as equals. In a conflict theory perspective females are currently seeking to be treated as equals by challenging the social norms of our culture. Even though women are given the opportunity to strive in our society they are still being undermined. For instance in a workplace setting, females are not given equal support from employers as they assume women
