Course Title: The U.S. Federal Government: Assignment: Federal Agency’s Origin Title: Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Disaster management and prevention have become a prevelent topic as well as a major priorty of today. Far too many fatal consequences are the results of inappropriately managed emergencies in vulnerable locations. Disasters may occurr at any given time or place as well as in a natural form or as an act of terror. Often times, disasters occur suddenly and without warning whereas millions of Americans are faced with this horrific tragedy every year. One of the most commonly known agencies of the federal government gained its notoriety during one of the United States’ deadliest disasters on record. Since its error-plaqued performance during the Hurrican Katrina era in 2005, this agency continues to be in need of image repair. Since its creation in 1979, this agency has repeatly fallen short of fulfilling the purpose of it mission. This report will focus on the origin of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and its legislative process. It will identify its organizational relationship to the President, congressional over site and budgeting committees. Furthermore, this report will address recent court actions and rulings that have shaped the operations of the agency. Finally, this report will explore recent media coverage involving issues and concerns of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Excessive conversation has evolved in recent years since the historical events of September 11, 2001 and other disasters. Many have heard of federal agencies and massive exchange regarding emergency management, FEMA, and Homeland Security; yet, very few understand their purpose.
