Purpose Statement: The purpose of this speech is to inform the class about a situation that caused terror and anxiety for me. I. Introduction A. Attention-Getter: That shrill moment of fear that ran through my body occurred the day we had to participate in the mock evaluation for cheerleading tryout’s my 8th grade year to make the high school team. I faced many feelings that almost kept me from coming back the following day, but in the end I persisted on. II. Body of the Speech A. The Situation 1. The last semester of my 8th grade year, I decided to take the risk and try out for the high school cheer team. 2. I had gymnastic and tumbling experience, but never had I cheered in my life; still, I wanted to be a cheerleader and wear the pretty little uniforms. 3. I practiced 2 days, hours on end. Then Wednesday came, the day of mock tryouts, and the first day I’d be able to impress the coaches. 4. Unbeknownst to me, I would be trying out not only in front of the coaches but also in front of the other 50 girls trying out. B. Physical Reactions 1. Seeing all the girls sitting down in the gym waiting to be evaluated immediately quickened my heartbeat. 2. The initial butterflies started fluttering in my stomach; I had to be able to impress the coaches and now my peers as well as the upperclassman. 3. I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. C. My Thoughts 1. The first thing that I thought was how judgmental all the girls would be if I messed up, I knew I couldn’t. 2. I thought I couldn’t go through with the mock tryout, I was way too nervous to comprehend anything going on in my surroundings. 3. After evaluating my situation, I just wanted to walk out the door and kiss my dreams of cheerleading goodbye. D. How I Dealt with the Situation 1. I decided to grow up, and go ahead with the mock tryout. 2. I had already come this far, I wasn’t going
