Fats and Diet * What is Fat? Fats are concentrated packages of energy containing more than twice as much energy as an equivalent mass of carbohydrate or protein. Fats are sometimes a required part of your diet but consuming way more than needed can create a problem. For example, French fries are good and easy to make but eating too much of it causes you to consume the undesirable fats and problems that come with it. Therefore, when this sort of energy input or consumption exceeds energy output, this leads to weight gain. * What is cholesterol? Cholesterol is found naturally in cell membranes and acts as the raw material for the synthesis of certain hormones. In fact, the only way we are able to tell the difference between females and Males is because sex hormones are made from cholesterol. The cholesterol that the body needs is obtained from the fats consumed. Cells of the body package cholesterol in a water-soluble protein in order to transport it in the blood. There are two very important types of cholesterol. * What are the two types of Cholesterol? The two types of cholesterol packaging are called: Low-density lipoprotein and high-density lipoprotein. Low-density lipoprotein also known as LDL is the “Bad” cholesterol. This sort of cholesterol has been associated with the clogging of arteries –LDL particles bind on cell membranes and are removed from the blood by the liver. Excess LDL cholesterol starts to form deposits on the walls of arteries and the accumulation on the artery wall cause plaques; which restricts blood flow to the heart and brain and can lead to heart attacks or strokes. The “good” cholesterol is called High-density lipoprotein (HDL). HDL carries bad cholesterol back into the liver which begins to break down.
