Understand Your Fats and Fibers SCI 241 April 24, 2014 Understand Your Fats and Fibers There are healthy and unhealthy fats such as monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats are known as the “good fats” because they are good for your heart, your cholesterol, and your overall health. Tran’s fats, and Saturated fats, are used in the manufacture of food to help it stay fresh longer. They are known as “bad fats” because they increase your risk of disease and elevate cholesterol. Saturated fats and Tran’s fat raise the cholesterol in the human body. Saturated fats are fats that consist of triglycerides containing only saturated fatty acids. Saturated fatty acids have no double bonds between the individual carbon atoms of the fatty acid chain. Unsaturated fats are fat or fatty acid in which there is at least one double bond within the fatty acid chain. (Burn Fat Formula, 2014) A fatty acid chain is monounsaturated if it contains one double bond and polyunsaturated if it contains more than one double bond. Trans fatty acids are manufactured fats created during a process called hydrogenation may be particularly dangerous for the heart and may pose a risk for certain cancers (Burn Fat Formula, 2014). Hydrogenate fats are produced when hydrogen is added to oil, which turns the liquid oil into a solid block of fat. Hydrogenate fats are the worst fats it is contained in foods like cookies and crackers. Some diseases that are caused from fats are heart disease, overweight, diabetes, high blood pressure, insulin resistance, and sleep apnea. Lipids fats play a large role in the functioning of the body such as it increases the brain functions in a positive way. Lipids fats also help joint function and energy production within the body.
