Fat and Water Soluble Vitamins Tharessa Morales SCI/241 6/16/2013 Calandra Alfred Fat- and Water-Soluble Vitamins Vitamins are nutrients the body needs in order to stay healthy. The body requires these vitamins, as well as minerals, either through a balanced, nutritious diet, health supplements or sometimes both. Vitamins help the body have the necessary energy to carry out daily functions of the body and help the power of the mind. Vitamins can be classified into two groups, each with an important role that determines how the vitamin acts within the body. Vitamins B and C are classified as water soluble vitamins, which the body requires on a daily basis to stay healthy and active. Vitamins A, D, E and K are classified as fat soluble vitamins which are usually absorbed in fat globules and are soluble in lipids (fats). These vitamins also play an important role in the health of the body although they are not required every day. The body requires a certain amount of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and other co-factors for normal function. When correctly balanced, these substances all interact with other essential nutrients, especially proteins, to keep our bodies functioning at optimum levels. Vitamins can cure many health problems and diseases and are necessary for the growth, vitality, health and general well- being of our bodies. Lipids, also known as fats, help fat soluble vitamins absorb through the intestinal tract which absorb best when taken with foods that contain a good fat content. Vitamins that are fat soluble can be found in foods such as, nuts, fish, yogurt and olives. Individuals who have a hard time consuming an appropriate amount of fresh organic fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and meat must take a quality vitamin supplement as a priority.
