Cause and Effect: Why is fast food so popular? “Over the last three decades, fast food has infiltrated every nook and cranny of American society” (Schlosser, “Fast Food Nation”). “The way we eat has changed more in the last 50 years than in the previous 10,000” (Food, Inc.). Up to 50 years ago, people used to sit down with their families and eat a nutritious homemade meal made from scratch. Now, they are choosing to eat fast food such as pizza, sandwiches, or hamburgers on a regular basis. Fast food originated in southern California and can now be found at every other major intersection in your city. “Fast food is now served at restaurants and drive-throughs, at stadiums, airports, zoos, high schools, elementary schools, and universities, on cruise ships, trains, and airplanes, at K- Marts, Wal-Marts, gas stations and even at hospital cafeterias” (Schlosser, “Fast Food Nation”). Fast food corporations spend billions of dollars to market their product to children, build restaurants near schools, and even build establishments inside of school cafeterias to make it more efficient for the consumer. “In 1970, Americans spent about $6 billion on fast food; in 2001, they spent more than $110 billion” (Schlosser, “Fast Food Nation”). There are many reasons why fast food is so popular. One of the main reasons is simply because consumers would rather consume tasty foods that are more reliable, quick, and affordable rather than buy nutritious foods that take time to cook. “Fast food has proven to be a revolutionary force in American life; I am interested in it both as a commodity and as a metaphor (Schlosser, “Fast Food Nation”).” If the consumers have the money to spend on fast food then they will continue to do so forever because they don’t know any better and just care about what is more efficient and cost effective to them. “The extraordinary growth of the fast
