Do you believe that fashion is a defining characteristic of Lebanese culture and identity? Is it a reflection of Lebanese society? is it a reflection society? Fashion is a term commonly used to describe a style of clothing worn by most of people of a country. A fashion usually remains popular for about 1-3 years and then is replaced by yet another fashion. Fashion refers to styles of dress that are popular in a culture at any given time. Such styles may change quickly. Fashion has become closely identified with the Lebanese culture and identity. Lebanon has become the place to be if fashion is what one seeks, even if many times, this is exaggerated. There are numerous reasons behind this identification. The Lebanese society in general is one that deeply and greatly cares about and keeps track of anything related to fashion. Its lifestyle and mentality now revolve around few main notions, with fashion being one of these, if not the primary. The Lebanese people are very judgmental and can decide to respect or disrespect someone based only on how he she looks, his mobile, hairstyle and other superficial criteria. Lee’s victims’ fifth commandment “Thou shalt require validation of thine own stylishness” (323) fits perfectly in this case since many admit that they dress up for others to see in this “appearance-centered society” (Lee 323) we are living in. That is also why many mothers, fathers, older sisters, or aunts and uncles spend so much on the children or babies in the family.
