Risk management and risk ‘talk’ is everywhere in today’s modern society. Risk management is not just confined to organisations but to hospitals, schools, universities and many other public organisations, including the very highest levels of government. Governments and large organisations must always act as if they are in control. But really there not, Governments don’t have control over natural disasters or the down turn in the economy. They do this to reassure the public’s confidence in the public and private sector. Many agencies in society which have traditionally played the role of taking risk on behalf of the public, such as insurance companies, financial services organisations and financial professionals. The focus of good risk management is the identification and treatment of these risks. They are faced everyday. This essay seeks to describe the unknown dangers facing farmers every day and why risk management needs to be taken more serious on Irish farms. A lot of work needs to be done to change farmer’s attitude and change their traditional laid back approach towards farm safety. Agriculture has the highest fatality rate out of all industry sectors ahead of Chemicals manufacturing, Construction, Education and Transport even though only 7.7% of Irish people are employed in the agricultural sector. As I come from a agricultural back round this is something I feel strongly about and have an interest in. Roughly 2,000 injuries occur on Irish farm every year, about 75 per cent of all accidents are associated with tractors, livestock, trips and falls with a lot of the victims being unsupervised children change is needed.
