‘Fahrenheit 9/11’ Media Coursework How does the director Michael Moore use techniques to present a negative view of George W. Bush in the film ‘Fahrenheit 9/11’? The controversial director Michael Moore released the documentary ‘Fahrenheit 9/11’ in 2002, in response to the Twin Tower attacks in America. The film aims to present a negative view of the bush government to the audience; in this essay I plan to examine the ways that Moore manipulates the audience’s response. At the start of the film, Moore presents us with scenes from the 2000 elections between George W. Bush and Al Gore. Moore creates an insight of what could; or in his, and a majority of fellow Americans opinions, should have happened if the elections were to have sided differently. Moore narrates this section; this creates a personal, more effective method to the way this factual information was fed to the audience. He starts off by showing clips of huge crowds in Florida clapping and cheering in joy for what everyone believed to be the president elect, Al Gore. Moore includes two very effective rhetorical questions directed to the audience, the first being: ‘was it all just a dream?’ Followed by, ‘Did the last four years really happen?’ This immediately captures the audience’s attention in what he is saying and acts as a good grasping beginning to the film. His tone of voice then switches from being quite serious and dramatic to being quite cynical and witty as the scene quickly jumps to a more callus atmosphere with funky hillbilly music played in the background to show Moore’s humour in making fun of Bush. Here, in quite a simple, pronounced, and slightly sarcastic toned voice he tells us facts that suggest Bush won the election on unfair terms, and that the election was rigged.
