It was just like seeing Santa on his sleigh in a Christmas parade. Obviously they weren’t the real Three Kings, but as a kid I believed they were. After the festival was over, my family and I went back to my grandmother’s house and had our family party. It just so happened it was my grandmother’s responsibility to throw the family party that year, which is why we flew down. At the family party, there was great food and drinks, and we even had a band come play traditional music.
Our family is all dressed up, and I can smell the evening’s food rooms away and hear the ending sounds of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade on the TV downstairs. We seem like a classic, cookie-cutter family. And then the holiday really begins. My grandma is usually the first to arrive, complete with her leopard-print duffle bag she carried everywhere with her. After her I hear the front door open again and know that, from this point on, the house won’t have another moment of silence.
We decided to make a huge breakfast and dance around the house with the music blasting, having a great time. We were talking about how great the day was going to be and how cool it was that my sister was going to let us use her car as long as we put gas in it. This mood didn’t last for much
My mother would cook for myself, my dad and my siblings on some weekends. The most important condiment that would go on top of our pancakes was King’s syrup. It was an inquired taste that grew on me. As I became a young woman and had three beautiful children I would still buy King’s syrup for any food that needed that thick maple syrup taste. It is now 2013 and it
When he finds his way back he brings items from Christmas town such as a tree and presents. The people love it and they try to recreate Christmas and bring “cheer” to the children. They get down to the day before Christmas and jack has the same suit as Santa dose and he sets off to bring toys to the kids after a dozen or so drop off the people shoot him down and this is his second threshold he realizes he messed up and he has to right his wrongs. When he gets to ogie boogie this is the
By the time every one gets to Grandma’s house, the house is already filling up with fabulous smells of pie, meat, and other wonderful foods and to top it off the smell of fresh cut grass blowing in for the opened windows throughout the house. Each family member prepares and brings a traditionally favored recipe. My grandma is always in charge of making the best pies in the world, especially cherry pie which happens to be my favorite. She also prepares the hot rolls, cheesy potatoes and famous deviled eggs. My aunts’ are normally responsible for bringing the green beans, cheese dip and potato salad and whatever else they fell like bring.
Every time my father goes to visit Mexico, he always visits the streets that he once enjoyed as a kid. Many immigrants like my father never forget the good times that they once had growing up in their first home. My immigrant sister in law who is from Mexico always mentions the beautiful city of Puebla where she grew up in. Now that she has been in the United States for a long time, she yearns the tasty mole her grandma use to make her at her house in the street corner. With memories like that, immigrants like my sister in law always have a special place in their hearts for their original
The most important times with my family are the holidays and special occasions spent together as a group. Aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, and great-grandparents all gather together at one of our homes in celebration of Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, the new year, birthdays, and graduations. We always have an abundance of dishes steaming with decadent food, such as my grandmom’s homemade macaroni and cheese. My mom usually fixes her sweet party punch: a mixture of Hawaiian punch, sprite, and sherbet. We gather around, eating, opening gifts, talking and laughing.
A Christmas movie serves as a soundtrack while the tree is twinkling and sparkling in the background. I love making the same traditional Christmas cookies that I have made forever (Pizzelles and Spritz) with people I love.. The Sarasota Crew boys also won their heats in the second varsity eight and the boys single and double. In the finals, the Sarasota Crew will have eight boys and four girls teams. IF OUR RESIDENTS SEE SOMETHING THAT LOOKS WRONG, WE WOULD APPRECIATE THEM CALLING 311.
Most people barbeque chicken, hotdogs, hamburgers, ribs, and much more, but everyone has king cakes which are only in Louisiana. The smell of the people barbequing is marvelous. Everyone has an abundance of food; therefore no one goes hungry and maybe have enough for leftovers the next day. After everything is over; the floats and eating, people pack their chairs, towels, bags of beads, barbeque pits and head on home after an exhaustive day. When they get home they take the beads out the bags and keep the ones they like and throw the rest in the bag, and the little kids look through the bags to find toys that they can play with.
