Pre-writing Overview 1. Pre-writing is a way to help you write an essay. It gets your concrete details (CD) down on paper so you can organize them. If you write your details down, you can look back at them whenever you get stuck. You can also review your pre-writing while you are putting your essay together. 2. Here are some things to know about pre-writing: a. You will learn 5 different ways of pre-writing. After we have covered all 5, you will decide which way you like best. You can use different pre-writing methods as the year goes on. It is important that you decide which way works best for you. b. You must do pre-writing on every essay you do this year. 3. The 5 ways of pre-writing are: a. Bubble cluster b. Spider diagram c. Outline d. Line clusters e. Columns Pre-writing Bubble Clusters Copy the example from the Smart Board on the back of this sheet. Notice the following things about the sample bubble cluster: 1. The subject of the pre-writing goes in the middle circle. 2. Each circle is numbered. The center bubble (main idea) is #1. 3. Count how many #2 bubbles branch off the middle one. You should find 2 of them. Your prewriting must have 2 of them also. 4. Now count how many #3 bubbles branch off each #2 bubble. You should see 2 of them coming off each #2 bubble. Your pre-writing must have 2 of them too. 5. Now count how many words are in each #3 bubble. You should notice that there are at least 5 (not including “and,” “but,” or “or”). Your pre-writing #3 bubbles must have at least 5 words each too.
