According to the Minnesota Department of Health, family planning is a fundamental aspect of enhancing the health outcomes of women and children. There are many family planning options ranging from contraception and birth control to abstinence and other natural methods to the latest medical technology breakthroughs. Identification Family planning services consist of pre-conception care, counseling, education, family planning methods, screening and laboratory tests. Methods of family planning include natural family planning, abstinence and all fertility methods approved by the FDA (hormonal contraception and contraceptive or birth control supplies like intrauterine devices and diaphragms). Factors that Affect Family Planning Family planning is about more than just birth control. Family planning encompasses all the decisions a woman makes regarding her reproductive health, from pregnancy prevention and planning, to child spacing and even protecting herself from sexually transmitted diseases. There are a wide variety of family planning options available, allowing each woman and her partner to choose the method that best fits their needs and desires. If you are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medication, or are receiving care for a medical condition, involve your health care provider when making your family planning choices.
