Family life impacts student performance in school One main topic in the news that always seems to emerge is that of overall performance from students at different schools. Though it is true that every parent wants the best education and opportunities for their child, many of the academic problems that arise are not solely due to low standards in teaching. Most of these problems have to do with how great of an impact the family has on adolescent children. A solution that I propose will solve this problem is to have after- school meetings offered to the public. According to Mario Cusinato in Parenting Styles and Psychopathology, he starts off stating that “various aspects of parental behavior has an influence on children as they grow up” (159). However, Cusinato goes on to say that “emotional warmth is found to be the most important aspect that influences children” (159). Cusinato refers to an older work by Rollins and Thomas, stating that “emotional warmth in a parent-child relationship is divided into two categories: supportive and non-supportive behavior. Both categories are responsible for affecting a child’s self-esteem” (159). Many theories have been proclaimed, based upon the fact why adolescents seem to be doing poorly in school. One theory could be that a lasting emotional impact from parents can always have an effect on children. Supportive behavior, such as motivation, is a big factor that can help a child to succeed in school. Whereas, non-supportive behavior or negativity, can cause low- self esteem and discouragement, which can often times cause a student to be less motivated in doing their school work. As a suggestion to help get more parental involvement approved in a particular school, I think that as principal of East Columbus High School, Mr. Mark Bridgers should take into consideration of getting more parents to volunteer in the
