Tentative Thesis Statement: The economic status, rather than cultural origin, plays the biggest role in determining the structural make-up of families in the United States. (Considering the economic status and cultural origin of U.S. residents, which plays the biggest role in determining the structure of the family?) When we think of the United States, the first thing that comes to mind is diversity. I would venture to say that there is no other country in the world that can boast such a vast collection of cultures and races. With the racial and cultural diversity comes a corresponding diversity in family structure. In most of the sociology classes I’ve taken, including this one, much emphasis is placed on family diversity, and how it is molded. There is information about how the root origin of certain cultures is often the determining factor in how families in America operate. When I take a step back, and view the structure of American families with no regard for race or culture, I can see a trend that is having a more profound impact on families than race or culture. The economic status, rather than cultural origin, plays the biggest role in determining the structure of families in the United States. It is important for us to understand this concept because we, as a society, need to have a good understanding of the variables that have the greatest impact on the way we live our lives. The things that do have the greatest impact on our lives should be a main focus of sociologists and policy makers so that we have the ability to modify those variables, when necessary, in order to work towards goals that we deem necessary to preserve positive aspects and prevent or mend the bad.
