Assess sociological explanations for the increasing diversity of the family There are many different types of family in the world today, not just the traditional nuclear families there are also many more lone parent and same sex families. In the world there has been a massive increase in the diversity of the family. There are now many types of family now; the nuclear family, the extended family, lone parent families, same sex families, reconstituted families etc. Statistic show that 65% of all families in the UK are nuclear. This has decreased massively as time has gone on. For example there is a higher proportion of female headed families among African Caribbean households. Social Class Diversity – Differences in family structure are partly the result of income differences between households of different classes. Likewise, there are class differences in child rearing practices. Life-stage Diversity - Family structures differ according to the stage reaches in the life cycle – for example newlyweds, couples with children, retired couples whose children have left home and widows or widowers who are living alone. Generational Diversity – Older and younger generations have different attitudes and experiences that reflect the historical periods in which they have lived. In 1857, the matrimonial causes act made divorce easier and cheaper but still too expensive for the lower and middle class. Also it was only possible if it could be proved in court that a matrimonial offence had occurred. In 1923, women were granted equal rights to men in divorce which meant the divorce rates were slowly increasing and so were the lone parent families as women were able to terminate unhappy marriage. The rise in divorced really took off in 1969 where the divorce law reform act came in. This was where you no longer had to prove that a matrimonial offence had been committed, just that your marriage had broken down. This made it much easier to get a divorce and the number of divorces increased massively. From 1969 to 1973 it increased by 50,000 people whereas before it only increased by around 2,000. Also it has now become socially acceptable to be in a same sex partnership and since the civil rights partnership act of 2004 it has expanded the sexual diversity. Also, womens education is now a lot better, so women are now not wanting to start a family and be in relationships but want to do well in their education and stay in education as long as possible. This means they are living on their own and are not being part of a family. Women also have higher expectations in a marriage now days, and will not tolerate being a victim of feminism
