Family Disagreement in a Visit to Grandmother and Forgiveness in Families

In A Visit to Grandmother by William Melvin Kelley, Doctor Charles Dunford visits his mother after a long period of time. There, they talk about the crazy stories about Doctor Charles Dunford’s older brother, GL. After Charles Dunford is not amused due to the carelessness and immaturity GL has portrayed in the story he finds his mother finding it hilarious. After, Charles gets in a fight with his mother because he suspects his mother of loving GL more than him. In Forgiveness in Families by Alice Munro, Val describes the failures of her brother, Cam; whether it was quitting school or leaving a job. She explains that even though his failures are a big deal, their mother always helps him get through them. Towards the ending Val finds it very difficult to forgive Cam because he almost lets their mother die by not knowing what to do when she collapse. In both of the stories the two characters who are a source of family disagreement are GL and Cam. The first family disagreement is when GL and Cam both frustrate their siblings: GL’s brother, Doctor Charles Dunford and Cam’s sister, Val. Another source of family disagreement is when GL and Cam’s mothers pay more attention and show more affection towards them compared to their other siblings. Lastly, both of them disappoint their families in their careers or actions. A huge source of family disagreement in both of the stories is when GL and Cam frustrate their siblings. Val becomes frustrated with Cam when: “He stayed out most of the night and when he got home he found mother unconscious on the bathroom floor. He got on the phone and called me (41).” This quote displays that Cam is irresponsible in staying out for most of the night and should have called an ambulance or taken his mother to the hospital, instead of calling her sister.
