Running head: PSYCHOANALYTIC FAMILY COUNSELING APPROACH Psychoanalytic Family Therapy Counseling Approach Linda Mario Liberty University 2012 COUN 601-B05 LUO Dr. Jenkins Abstract When a family’s environment becomes saturated with chronic conflict the members become unable to achieve a healthy balance and mutual respect. This turmoil needs to be neutralized rather than exacerbated, in order to gain mutual respect for all family members. Family therapy can establish the reduction of conflict among the family system. Sometimes a family member can be diagnosed with a disorder creating anger and resentment among members. The family members’ symptoms can be manifested through fear, anxiety and trepidation with in his or her unique story (Mesh et Al, 2006, ¶ 3).
In which he offered his hypothesis on attachment and its importance between mother and child. In the following chapters we will explore what exactly he is stating, what is mother love? When he talks about its importance on a ‘child’s mental health’, what assertions is he making and do others agree with him, do they accept his techniques and hypothesis? Bowlby’s report was controversial but it influenced changes within health care, social work and in parenting. His report was influenced by Lorenz’s (1935) ethological studies of imprinting and his subsequent theory that attachment was innate.

Journal Article Review 1 The journal article, “Developing a Spiritual Assessment Toolbox: A Discussion of the Strengths and Limitations of Five Different Assessment Methods” by David Hodge, gives an overview of the benefits and limitations of five assessments methods; spiritual histories, spiritual lifemaps, spiritual genograms, spiritual ecomaps, and spiritual ecograms used by social workers to determine their client’s spiritual level. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations requires for social worker to determine whether patients, who said they had an encounter with God either through audible voice or visually, are mentally impaired or are a circumstance of their religious beliefs. These assessment tools can assist the social worker to devise a plan for their patient’s recovery. Hodge (2005) stated that “spirituality is often a core animating principle in clients’ view of reality; their spiritualty, thus, often fosters a culturally distinct worldview” (p. 314). Moreover, Hodges (2005) contended that 43 percent of all mental health clients rely on their religious deity for healing.
For example if a father leaves the mother unexpectedly and the mother cannot cope looking after the child on her own then the child will be optionally put in care or a care order put in place. Once a family have a breakdown this can put a lot of stress on individuals in the family including the children. The children may struggle with their situation and begin to show signs of behavioural problems, this will stress the single parent and then the child once again may be optionally or forced to be put into care. • Suspected abuse- if there are signs that the parents are abusing the child this can be from physical, emotional, social and intellectual abuse then this would be another reason for the child to have a care order put in
Sociologically, grieving within families is not an easy task. Each family member reacts to death differently and forces family members to make changes in their lives in order to adjust to life without this family member. Raney and Charles had a hard time accepting the suicide of Uncle Nate. When Charles voiced his opinion that Uncle Nate was clearly depressed, obsessive-compulsive, and crippled from his life experiences, thus needing psychological help in order to heal, Raney took it as an insult. In Raney’s mind, Charles was placing blame on her, her family, and specifically, her mother who spent most of her time taking care of Uncle Nate.
If a child experiences an event in his life such as a death or a serious illness, he will often find it very difficult to feel in control of his emotions. Many children will be profoundly affected by their parents separating or divorcing. The child will probably be very attached to both adults and will possibly be put under pressure to choose which parent, in their eyes, they love the most. A child in a situation of family break-up will often find trust very difficult to re-form. Occasionally, children will hear stories about “...what dad did...” or “...what mum said...” These situations could make the child appear to be distant or aloof from the outside and that they are indifferent to events.
I chose the concept of mental illness from a Christian point of view, based upon my teachings and understanding from a Christian point of view. Throughout history, the people who founded hospitals, homes and assistance were all church-related. However, churches throughout time have not all been supportive. Many churches viewed mental illness as demonic possession, and some fundamentalists still believe so today. With readings from the text book, my bible a book called kingdom Minded by Dr Miles Monroe along with several articles from online, I came to a conclusion that they all in some way apply and respond to mental illness in different ways.
2) Discipleship Counseling Through the use of personal and professional experiences, Dr. Neil T. Anderson (2003) lays the foundation for future counselors to use as a guide to reach mentally ill individuals in his book Discipleship Counseling (Anderson, 2003). This instructional piece gives current and future counselors the instruction and information needed to reach out and counsel the spiritually oppressed. Anderson (2003) breaks this piece of literature down into three main focuses: defining and understanding mental health; counseling the spiritually oppressed; overcoming false guidance, deception, bitterness and rebellion—and helping others experience freedom in Christ. Discipleship Counseling also gives the reader a better understanding of how discipleship counseling works and shows them the basis of
