Throughout ‘Mametz Woods’ the fallen soldiers are constantly referred to collectively, never as individuals. The use of pronouns for referral, such as ‘them’ and ‘they’ makes the reader realise that there were many soldiers involved in the battle of Mametz Woods, and question how many lives were lost. It also makes the reader question the value of the soldiers in a war, and whether they had a distinct value or not, or whether they were just ‘wasted young’, so Sheers presents the effects of war upon the soldiers as being meaningless and worthless. However, when ‘them’ is placed in the opening line of the poem ‘For years afterwards the farmers found them’ as a reader, it places the pronoun in a different perspective, excitement, and we are intrigued
