Ashley Hash Molly Luby ENG 113 12 July 2009 Not Your Typical Fairytale Why then did Jane Yolen yet again write another novel covering topics that dwelt with these horrible events? Yolen stated in an interview that the idea of writing _Briar Rose came to her while watching the documentary “Shoah”. The documentary described a concentration camp inside a castle called Chelmno. There was the castle, barbed wire fence, and the gassing of innocent people. To Yolen this portrayed the fairytale Sleeping _Beauty in a horrible but fascinating way. While Yolen was not eager to continue research on the Holocaust, after having lunch with one of her editors, she was persuaded to write the novel (Yolen). Nearly six million Jewish people were murdered during the Holocaust. This included men, women, and children. They were placed into confinements called Concentration Camps. There, they were forced to work and were treated horribly. Often, Jews and other people in the camps were carried to gas chambers to be killed or lined up and shot execution style. This was called genocide. If the gas chambers or Nazis didn’t kill the victims held in these camps, they died from starvation, brutal and inhumane work environments, or disease.…show more content…
There were approximately nine million Jews that lived in the twenty one countries that Germany would eventually occupy during World War II. Sadly, two out of every three Jews were killed from 1933 to 1945 (Chitnis). People who followed Hitler and worked under him were known as Nazis. While Hitler and the Nazis were in control, Germany lived in a constant state of fear and distrust. This made it easier for Nazis to gain control of every business and organization in Germany.
