Kayla Regan F451 Final Assessment Block 3, Odd 9-10-12 It was once said that "the bravest of individuals is the one who obeys his or her conscience." This quote can be applied to Ray Bradbury's novel, Fahrenheit 451 in many ways. Montag and many other characters in the story can be used as an example for this quote. This quote can be interpreted in a few different ways. “The bravest of individuals is the one who obeys his or her conscience. The way I see this quote is that it’s a lot easier to go with the flow than it is to do what you know is right. I think it is easier to do what your friends are doing, than to say no and do what you want to do. This quote means that it takes a lot more courage to do what you know is right, instead of falling into peer pressure. This is shown many times through many different characters throughout the novel. Montag, the main character, is a very brave character. For example, Montag begins on his road to bravery by asking Faber for help. In the story, Faber tells Montag that books may help people to stop making the same insane mistakes. This puts Montag in the position to try bringing books back into society. This is brave of him because it isn’t something anyone else would try to do. Since books are illegal, Montag is taking a step out and doing his own thing, instead of staying in the background and letting whatever happens, happen. Also, when Montag and his new group of book people set off for the city to help people survive after the bomb was set off, it took a great deal of bravery for him. Granger tells Montag that he is nothing and he isn’t important. At this point, Montag realizes that his cause is much more important than he is, himself. Although, Montag continues on into the city. To realize that you are not important, but your purpose is, yet still move forward, takes a lot of bravery and courage.
