1.1)What is a platform game? A platform game is a video game characterized by requiring the player to jump to and from suspended platforms or over obstacles. It must be possible to control these jumps and to fall from platforms or miss jumps. The most common unifying element to games in this video game genre is a jump button; other jump mechanics include swinging from extendable arms, as in Ristar or Bionic Commando, or bouncing from springboards or trampolines, as in Alpha Waves. These mechanics, even in the context of other genres, are commonly called platforming. The term itself describes games where jumping on platforms is an integral part of the gameplay, and came into use some time after the genre had been established, but no later than 1983. However, it is not a pure genre and is very frequently coupled with elements of other genres, such as the shooter elements in Contra, the adventure elements of Flashback or the RPG elements of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. 1.2) When did platform games originate? Platform games originated in the early 1980s, and 3D successors were popularized in the mid-1990s. 1.3) Why is this specific genre popular? One of the platform games created was Mario. Why is Mario so popular and common? Mario was one of the first arcade games you could take home that had the best 2-d graphics at the time. It also had a story line and the scenery would change in each level. Before it was simple one screen games like Pong and Pacman that never changed except Pacman where the lines in the maze would change and that was about it. It could be that he was one of the first games to be released and since has made many different types of games on many different platforms.
