Factors that can influence the development of an individual’s self-concept Age Ageing can have an impact on an individual’s self-concept. How young or old a person views themselves can have an affect mentally on the individual. This is because age can affect how someone views their abilities to accomplish something which can prevent them from contributing or participating in events. Appearance How pretty, ugly, thin, fat or however people perceive themselves or how others perceive them has a massive impact on our self-concept. Importance of appearance is heavily governed by media and societal expectations. If the individual doesn’t adhere to these expectations it can affect them socially and in turn influence their self-concept Gender Society has a big role in this and the type of society someone grows up in can affect how they are viewed as a gender. Depending on what is expected of their gender in the society they live can heavily influence their self-concept. For example media and common attitudes can affect how someone thinks they should behave due to their gender. Culture Culture can influence someone’s self-concept as they will either decide to follow it or go against it. However both of these can influence an individual’s self-concept as they both influence the person’s life style. Income Being able to buy clothes and material possessions an individual wants to own can influence the development of an individual’s self-concept since the financial background someone comes from can have an effect on your personality and how the individual treats other people. Environment The family environment can greatly influence an individual’s self-concept and can start from childhood. The simplest idea of being a ‘bad’ or ‘good’ child can influence how someone will view themselves. Education How teachers treat an individual and how involved
