The Effects of Different Factors on the Germination of Mung Bean (Vigna radiata) Beray, Brandon ; Relucio, Mike ; Tomolva, Kim; Wong, Jonathan Department of Biology University of the Philippines August 28, 2014 OVERALL SUMMARY Different factors play a role on the germination of the plants. These factors include temperature, pH, osmotic concentration, light, and plant hormones. In this experiment, the students tested the effects of varying concentrations of these factors on the germination of mung beans. For each factors, there were 3 setups prepared (except for light which has 2 setups only). There were 10 mung beans placed randomly per setup. In testing the effect of temperature, it was seen that mung seeds tend to thrive in hot temperature than in cold environment, with room temperature as the control setup. There was no germination recorded for the samples that were placed on the refrigerator. For the effect of pH, it was seen that mung seeds tend to grow in basic environments than in acidic ones. There was no generation recorded for the samples placed on acidic environment (pH 3) either. With the concept of osmosis, test for osmotic concentration showed that mung seeds tend to thrive in much less salinity than in higher ones. Surprisingly, the students have observed that the mung seeds thrived more in dark environment than in the light setup. Last but not the least was the test for the effects of hormones on the germination of the mung seeds. It was shown that for all the setups, 100% germination was observed. All the data gathered were analyzed statistically using ANOVA and post hoc tests. It was shown that for all the setups, there were significant differences observed. Thus, the students were able to prove the results statistically and show the varying effects of the different concentrations of the factors that affect the germination of mung
