Factors Affecting Development

A child’s or young person’s development can be influenced and affected by a wide range of factors. These factors may be personal (i.e. health status, disability, sensory impairment, learning difficulties, etc.) or they may be external factors (i.e. poverty and deprivation, family environment and background, personal choices, looked after/care status, education etc.) Personal & External factors: Personal factors are factors that are built in to the child or young person; these factors are unique to each individual. These factors can interlink with external factors and influence the rate of the child’s or young person’s development further. External Factors however, are factors external to the child or young person’s self, these factors are varied and controversial as there are many types of factors that will affect the development and progress of the child or young person. Personal factors that can influence the child or young person’s development include Health, Disability and an Impairment of some sort. If the child or young person is suffering from one or more of these factors, it may restrict their development or the opportunities for them to develop whether that may be academically or socially. Generally, if a child or young person suffers from any one or more of the external factors i.e. a child or young person who suffers from poor health, physical disability or an impairment of some sort, it may put the child or young person in a position of lacking self confidence and therefore affect their social skills and interaction with their peers and teachers which will eventually affect their academic skills also. External factors can range into a variety of things; a child or young person may come from a different family environment, culture, and circumstances from other peers.
