People need to be more careful when posting about things because no matter what, it will always be permanent online. Jung’s “ The Negative Effects of Social Media on Society and Individuals” points out many reasons on how social networking has its flaws. The reasoning of cyber-bullying, false sense of connection, and lack of privacy should be pointed out to the ones who don’t understand what the negative effects are online. People are blinded by the addictive quality of networking than really seeing the problems of
New generation likes to use social media as self advertisement and sometime they share very personal information. By doing this, their future privacy fells endanger and can affect badly in their mind in future which is not a good thing for the society, widely for the nation. Also, social media is hurting our society by spreading misinformation faster than any other media. Author Amanda Thomas shows a statistics in the
They may become so used to communicating via internet that they lose basic communication skills and can’t hold a face to face conversation. Prior to social media, people were able to have secret affairs. But now, it has become so much easier to trace foot prints that are left behind, which in turn makes it easier for couples to spy on each other. Sharing passwords, setting rules as to who your significant other can and can’t have on their friends list, or even going as far as making them delete social media all together will cause many problems between insecure couples. In general, relationships can be greatly affected both positively and
Social media helps teens advance socially in the world, but it seems a side effect of social media is depression. Lara Devgan, a plastic surgeon in New York City and writer of ABC news, writes in her article, “Facebook May Be Making You Sad,” that a study from the University of Michigan shows that the more people use Facebook, the more unhappy they become. The study showed that users of social media sites were dissatisfied with their lives after they got off their social media site. People may get more friends on social media sites, but the more they see their friend’s lives, the more they are unhappy with their own lives. This is just a natural human action.
The article takes a sudden turn to reveal a darker side to the Facebook fad. Originally Zuckerberg agreed to help three upperclassmen create a social networking site but was later sued by them for stealing their idea when Zuckerberg made Facebook on his own. The author uses a great deal of formal diction and legal jargon, which can intimidate the reader. Vargas even describes one of the upperclassmen suing Zuckerberg as “Tall, wide shouldered, and gregarious,” creating a mental image that would daunt anyone. In these court hearings, some very embarrassing and damaging things had been exposed about Zuckerberg.
I have notice that Facebook catalysis people’s search for attention. The little things like getting a comment or feedback becomes addictive, leading to more Attention Seeking (“OMG can’t believe what just happened!”). Status and what people say they’re up to doesn’t really reflect who they are or what’s really happening in their lives. It’s the most superficial skim of a person’s
The people that interview us and give us our jobs have the option to use Facebook and technology to observe us and see what we are about and decide whether we would make a good fit for their position. In Roni Jacobson’s essay “Facebook Snooping on Job Candidates May Backfire for Employers” he says that “Profile screening (of our profiles on Facebook) could potentially color the judgment of the applicant- whether they realize it or not”. Everything we do online like posting about the awesome party we attended last night or saying something about how we hate working is seen by our employers which in some cases can cause loss of our opportunity for that job. Technology can give us opportunity but also take it away just like that. There are definitely positives and negatives that come out of technology but it doesn’t matter how much we learn or how much we take from it, we will never have anything without reality and the real life aspect of life itself.
In a sense, Pitts is showing concern for the future generations, and how they would live their lives. At the rate that technology and social media is affecting us now, how would people be able to physically communicate? Will society be undermined to a status of physical solitude, where one tweets the “exciting” life they are having to others that he or she cannot even recognize the faces of? In the horrifying context (the shooting itself and social media’s part in it) of the shooting of Justin Valdez, Pitts fully demonstrates the unintentional yet detrimental effects of social media on the general public, thus partially refuting a commonly believed idea that social media is designed to allow people to stay well connected to one
Facebook is the gun that enables us to fire virtual bullets at all of the people that we despise, but every so often we take a shell in return. This shell can put a ripple in our psychological state which has us asking ourselves, I am I as happy as my friends ? “ The real danger with Facebook is not that it allows us to isolate ourselves, but that by mixing our appetite for isolation with our vanity, it threatens to alter the very nature of solitude” (Marche) . People should have their moments of solitude in this crazy stressful life; Sadly facebook acts as a weapon that destroy our much needed seclusion. In today’s generation having a face book ties you to being part of the pop culture phenomenon, without having one you receive the feeling that you are missing out on the virtual connection.
Social issues A major social issue in my generation is technology such as cell phones, computers, tablets etc… The 2000’s is mainly based off of social media like the wide spread of “My Space and other cites that connect you with people around the world. I think we all spend way too much of our time entertaining other people. Social media is not being used in the right way, which I think its harming people. Certain things should be monitored more closely especially pertaining to people of a younger age group. All of this technology is really hurting people and not actually helping them.
