Even though we have many algorithms to work on Data Mining , cold start has made people to step back in analyzing the functionality of those algorithms. This lead to little decrease in creativity and optimizations in data mining algorithms. Cold start can be described as unavailability of data for modeling algorithms. “Grief in the Age of Facebook” is the article that causes people to think about their lives and eternal things in the age of advanced technologies. According to the author, life is too complicated and people whom we known or see everyday may show us we do not know them at all. People demonstrate their individuality from different aspects and an accident can take life. However, the author wanted to show that memories are those eternal things that help people remember those who have died. The age of Facebook contributes in doing it by means of promoting “memorizing” policy, introduced since 2005.
Sarah Kliff, author of “Facebook: Why I Hate it…” writes, “I have no idea how many hours of my life I have wasted on Facebook.” I agree with this statement because it is true. We have wasted so much time on Facebook and other forms of technology that we have lost time for other, more important things. Facebook and its counterparts do help us in many aspects like staying connected but we forget that we have real things in life that are right in front of us to stay in touch with instead of wasting time with cyber friends or a cyber-community. Technology does have a good side. It can assist us in many ways.
In fact, I believe it has given us a more effective way of communicating and engaging with one another especially in our fast-paced society. If I am on a work assignment one of my favorite tools to research is twitter. I find it to be a quick news feed and I usually learn about news first from there before learning it from the mainstream media such as television or radio. And of course facebook has been the staple for me as for many in helping us remain engaged and to keep abreast of graduations, weddings, births or other special events regarding our family and friends. Social media continues to make strides to make communication more accessible and easier for all of us.
Author Louis Kraft states that, social networking has taken too much control of our daily lives, to the point where it leads to people being envious and depressed (2011). Activities such as cyber bullying have been more prominent and have increased due to social media, resulting in many depressed victims. Also, terrorist groups, such as the Al-Qaeda and the Al-Shabbab, use social networks to spread messages of hate and violence, which may lead to religious conflict and fear in the world. It’s extremely unfortunate that a system that was supposed to bring us so close and working together has actually backfired into one that creates disruption. Likewise, the never ending use of social network causes people to get spend a lot of time, glued to their phones and other wireless devices, forgetting the importance of actual human to human contact.
Friends could share inspiring quotes or links to invaluable resources. Facebook also gave friends and family the opportunity to provide support and encouragement to sufferers but also ‘share’ useful links and information. The language primarily used on this platform was informal and casual, however, many of the links were formal and academic. While Facebook didn’t teach me many new facts about postnatal depression, there was a wide network of support offered. Pinterest – Pinterest was useful in learning about postnatal depression because it provided countless links to blogs and other information sources about the topic.
