WTF is AFD?! “What the fuck is AFD?!”, my exchange student stated in his slight but very obvious central European accent. AFD is simply stands for “Anti-Friction Device” in simpler terms it is simply a metal plate on the front of the binding that keeps a skier from destroying his skis with his boot as he puts on his skis. The look on his face is one I will never forget, the look of pure confusion mixed with some of the strongest emotions of happiness and joy I had seen in a while emanated from his face. His name was David and he had just arrived about a week ago to my crazy family and after a weekend of summer partying was ready to see the rest of town with his new brother. As we entered the realm of skiing in America his mind was blown. You could easily say it came as a bit of a culture shock to him. However living with him for a full year made me see how much the culture of skiing has impacted my life. Positively or negatively impacted is yet to be seen but I am sure it will be discovered soon. Nevertheless the impact skiing has had on my life is incredibly evident. Trying to narrow down my skiing to one culture is similar to attempting to narrow down the United States to one culture it is simply not possible. The more I tried to “name” the culture I was a part of it became obvious that it was going to have something to do with skiing. Skiing has been in not only my life but also my family’s ever since I saw the rise of one of my biggest idols, Sean Pettit. Sean became a huge role model of mine when he began to gain prominence in the early 2000’s and I have been a huge fan ever since. Sean, who became a professional skier at the young age of eleven when he began to gain sponsorships and travel the world to ski, was an immediate inspiration to me at the young age of 8. As I began my ski career I found that no matter what I did I was trying to be like him. So
