How far do you agree that The Great Gatsby and Fitzgerald’s short stories are primarily concerned with exploring wealth and the consequences of wealth? In the course of your answer, refer to at least 2 of the short stories you have studied. There is no doubt that wealth is presented as a primary concern in Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, The Diamond as Big as the Ritz and Bernice Bobs her Hair. The characters in the stories are defined by their wealth along with the plot which illustrates the pursuit of wealth; even the settings and images give us the idea of wealth being seen as a way to gain the American Dream. Firstly in The Great Gatsby the characters are defined by wealth and by the type of wealth which they have. Fitzgerald makes this even clearer by having the characters in different geographic areas. Daisy and Tom Buchanan live in East Egg where all the families with old money lived. On the other hand Gatsby and Nick Carraway live on West Egg where the new money families lived. The Valley of Ashes is the nickname for the lower and more ignored place in all of the area because of its low status. In other words Fitzgerald gives us a geographic map of wealth along with the difficulties from getting from one to the other. As Tom and Daisy live on East Egg and Gatsby and Nick on West Egg with a large river separating them, it can connote the insurmountable barrier between Gatsby and Daisy. Fitzgerald portrays wealth through Nick Carraway, Tom and Daisy Buchanan and Jay Gatsby. They each represent wealth and also the consequences of it. He presents the Buchannan’s and shows that they are part of the one of the ‘old money’ families who have taken on the lifestyle of ‘The American Dream’ which in the novel is viewed differently by the characters.
