Explore the ways in which Harper Lee presents ideas about the racism and prejudice in Maycomb society. Harper Lee uses imagery to show racism and prejudice in the book ‘To kill a Mockingbird’. Racism is shown through characters to demonstrate the change in Maycomb’s society. Historical background is entering the book very often because it is based on true life story. The book is written about 1950’s but set way back earlier-about 1930’s. This influence the way people were like-violent and disrespectful to black people. It is because America was having a tough time-slave trade which made black people to be forced to leave their homes and go to work for white people who would keep them in terrible conditions. Slaves wouldn’t have any rights to say a word because they were called ‘disgrace’ and they are not accepted as the same level as white people. ‘Maycomb was an old town’ because everybody knew what was happening at the time, therefore gossip about Thomas Robinson would spread as fast as light. So, Lee’s aim was to change society which was discriminating people who were far away from being respectful beings and showing unequal society. Francis is Scout’s cousin who is rude and disrespectful by saying that Atticus is a ‘Nigger-lover’ which makes Scout to lose her patience-she ‘split her knuckle to the bone on his front teeth’. This action leads Scout to be seen as violent in front of Uncle Jack’s eyes. However, Uncle didn’t know the truth behind this brutal and aggressive accident where Scout, not Francis gets in trouble. This accident shows the way it was normal to say about black people because parents who were disrespectful for slaves, were showing racism to their children. However, Scout accepts this phrase as a horrible thing because she knows that Atticus is not like other people-he respects everybody and does not teach Scout and Jem to be racists because it
