Explain how own role and practice can impact on communication with an individual who has specific communication needs. As a carer it is your role and responsibility to support individuals to express themselves. The way in which you can do this is by assessing their needs, access information regarding their communication needs, providing the appropriate support, aids or equipment, encouraging and motivating communication, working with others and by monitoring the effectiveness of that support. Without the appropriate support the individual would be unable to express their needs or how they are feeling which can lead to both emotional and physical difficulties. It is important to find out a person’s communication preferences to be able to support them in the best way and meet their needs. There are some factors that can influence the capacity of an individual to express consent, these can be mental conditions, (mental capacity), Physical conditions (communication abilities), availability or lack of options. INFORMED CHOICES AND CHALLENGES When an individual want to make choices about their lives it is the role of the support worker to ensure that they have all the support they need to help them identify any barriers they may face and support them to overcome them. You must ensure the individual has all the appropriate information and that the information provided is in a form which the individual can understand. For Example; if the individual has problems with hearing or sight them the form in which information should be provided should reflect their disability.
