Explain and assess the reasons why the reds won the civil war (12) The first reason was that the whites were spread out all over Russia. This worked to the reds advantage as the whites could not support each other so the reds could just fight a white army one at a time with overwhelming superiority. The reds were also in a central position in Russia so they could control all of the transport links such as rail stations. This meant that the reds could quickly move troops and supplies very quickly to areas where they were needed. Another advantage the reds had was they had the support of the peasants. They had the peasants support as they though the whites would restore the old regime and landlords so they would have to go back to poor conditions and pay. Although the peasants didn’t like the reds as they came and took grain and other supplies they needed under wartime communism. The peasants saw the reds as better in the long run when the civil war is over. The final advantage the reds had was superior military man power. This was because under wartime communism Lenin said that all food should go to soldiers first and what was left should go to the people in the cities. This encouraged thousands of men to join the red army not because they supported them but because they would get fed and not starve. This amount of man power led to the reds being able to use overwhelming force against the whites.
